This publication is not medical advice

idinsayit publishes essays and articles about psychology, addiction, recovery and writing. It is editorial work. It is general, it is written for no one in particular, and it cannot know anything about you.

Nothing in the publication is medical advice, psychiatric advice, psychological assessment, diagnosis, prescription, or treatment. That is true of every article, every letter and every free piece. It is different inside the portal, where a clinician who has met you and taken your history is treating you and what you are told is meant for you. Even there, this practice does not make medical diagnoses and does not prescribe: what it offers is psychological treatment and clinical guidance, and the list of what it is not is further down this page. It is not a substitute for care from a qualified clinician who has actually met you and taken your history.

Do not start, stop, or change a medication, a dose, or a treatment plan because of something you read here. Withdrawal from alcohol and from some other substances can be dangerous and occasionally fatal without medical supervision. Talk to a doctor first.

Reading does not make you a client

Reading an article, subscribing, replying to the letter, leaving a comment, or writing to the editors does not create a clinical relationship, a therapeutic relationship, or a duty of care. We cannot assess you by email and we will not try.

If you write to us describing a personal difficulty, we will read it with respect. We may point you towards help. That is not treatment and should not be relied on as treatment.

This is not an emergency service

The site is not monitored around the clock. Nobody is watching the inbox at three in the morning. If you or someone else is in danger, do not write to us and do not wait for a reply.

If you are in crisis, in India

  • Tele-MANAS: 14416. The national mental health helpline. Free, 24 hours, many languages.
  • iCall: 9152987821. Counselling by telephone and email.
  • Emergency services: 112. For immediate medical danger, overdose, or risk to life.
  • Your nearest hospital emergency department. Go, or have someone take you.

Outside India, contact your local emergency number or your national crisis line.

What the practice relationship is, and when it begins

Separately from the publication, idinsayit runs a private clinical practice. Its written programmes are built for substance use; the hour is not, and much of the work has nothing to do with drinking or using. It works in two ways, usually together. There is written work: a clinician opens one session at a time in a private portal, you write your answers there, you submit them, and a clinician reads and responds. And there are sessions: fifty minutes of booked time, held online or in person as agreed with your clinician, bought in blocks and paid for before the first of them.

A clinical relationship begins only when all of the following have happened:

  1. You have made contact and been through an intake assessment with a member of our clinical team.
  2. The practice has accepted you: we do not accept everyone, and where the work is not right for someone we say so and, where we can, say where else to look.
  3. You have been given a written agreement setting out the terms of care, the fees, the limits of confidentiality and what is expected of both sides, and you have signed it.
  4. Consent to treatment and to the handling of your data has been recorded.
  5. Your portal account has been created and your care has begun, whether that is a first session held or a first piece of work opened to you.

Those five steps are how the relationship begins, and we will tell you plainly when you are through them. Being on a waiting list is not being in treatment, and neither is subscribing to the publication or writing to us at length, however honest the letter.

We will not use that sequence against you. Where we have accepted you, taken your money and begun your care, we owe you what a clinician owes a patient. Nothing on this page reduces that duty or is to be read as reducing it, and if something goes wrong in the gap between paying and starting, that is ours to answer for.

What it is not. The practice is written work and booked sessions, and much of it is asynchronous. It is not crisis care, not inpatient or residential treatment, not medically supervised detoxification, and not psychiatric prescribing. Where you need any of those we will say so and will not take you on. Where you are already under someone else’s care we will want to know, and, with your permission, to coordinate.

Ending it. Either side may end the relationship. If we end it, we say why, we give you notice, and we help you find something else where we can. Your right to a copy of your writing, and to have it deleted, survives the ending. See the Privacy Policy.

Clinical material in the publication

Where published work draws on clinical experience, identifying details are removed or changed, and no client’s writing appears without their written consent, given specifically for that piece and freely refusable. Refusing costs nothing and changes nothing about a person’s care. Case material may be composite or illustrative and should not be read as an account of any one person.

Accuracy, and other people’s sites

We try to be accurate and to correct what we get wrong. Research changes and articles age; a piece reflects what was understood when it was written and carries its date. We make no warranty that everything here is complete or current.

Links to other sites are for reference. We do not control them and we are not responsible for what they say or do.

Limits

To the extent the law allows, idinsayit, as the publication and as the practice, is not liable for loss arising from a decision you took on the strength of something you read here. Nothing in this disclaimer limits liability for anything that cannot lawfully be limited, and nothing in it displaces the duties we owe our clients under our clinical agreement or under the Privacy Policy.
