BARE: The Return™

BARE: The Return is six sessions for the period after a relapse, when you have used again and are deciding what to do next. You end the episode, then build a one-page plan for the situation most likely to take you out.

BARE: The Return runs the relapse-prevention work of the BARE curriculum at depth. It is for the period after a relapse, whether it came during a programme or after one. Its six sessions follow the BARE phases: BREAK, ALIGN, RECLAIM and EMPOWER.

Session 1 treats a relapse as two events: the use, and the story you tell yourself afterwards, which turns a single lapse into a full return to use. Over the six sessions you write the facts of the lapse, then rewrite that story as a fact without the verdict. You trace the decisions behind the use and name the high-risk situation as one real moment, not a category. You mark your old plan real or theatre, then build a smaller one you will actually use. You practise four coping tools and plan one repair action for each relationship the relapse damaged. You leave with a one-page high-risk plan and a written roster: the people who hold your recovery with you, and a crisis number you have tested. You also leave with one rule: at the first warning sign, you make the first call.

The path

6 sessions · 1 part

  1. The Six Sessions

Session 1, After the Drink, ends the episode: you separate the lapse from the sentence you told yourself afterwards, make a Stop Plan for the next twenty-four hours and park any large decision until a later session, with a clearer head. Session 2, The Chain, traces the decisions that led to the use and names the high-risk situation. Session 3, The Gap, marks the old plan real or theatre and rebuilds the daily anchor. Session 4, The Tools, teaches urge surfing, playing the tape forward, a refusal script and removing the setup. Session 5, The Repair, plans amends through action and prepares you for distrust. Session 6, The Watch, lists your warning signs and writes the one-page plan, the roster and the rule: at the first sign, the first call.

How it works

One session at a time

The six sessions are taken in order, each built on the one before. Session 1 is about the next twenty-four hours and stopping the episode. Each session has four exercises and ends with work to carry forward. This work does not replace individual counselling, medical care or a crisis line. If you might be in withdrawal, get a medical review before anything else. The risk of suicide and self-harm rises in the days after a relapse. If you are thinking of harming or killing yourself, call a crisis line or your local emergency number now.

Each session opens in your own private area of this site. You read it, then write your answers there, and the clinician who reads your work replies. Nothing is timed.

What is held, and for how long

What you write is private. It is not used to train anything, not sold, and not shared with anyone who does not need to know, and never without your specific consent except where the law requires it, as the Privacy Policy sets out. It is kept for three years after your last contact with the practice, and you can ask for a copy or its deletion at any point.
