An elderly woman in a cotton sari sits by the window at dawn, a lamp lit behind her, sending a red rose from her phone.

6.04 a.m. A rose, a verse, and four folded hands by twenty past.

At four minutes past six every morning, a rose arrives. It is a photograph of a rose, dewy and heavily saturated, with a verse across it in yellow italics and the words Good Morning in a font that has not been seen elsewhere since 2009. It comes from Sarala Atthai in Coimbatore, who is seventy-eight, and it goes to forty-three people in five countries, in a group called Krishnamurthy Family (Official). The bracket was added in 2020, after a cousin started a second group for memes.

By twenty past six there are four replies, all of them folded hands. By seven there is a forward about the dangers of reheating rice and a photograph of somebody’s idlis in New Jersey, where it is still yesterday.
